We also understand that nutrition is one of the topics that concerns kidney patients and their families and/or caregivers the most, as it is a fundamental part of their daily lives. Therefore, the main functions of the nutrition service are:
- Ensure that all patients are adequately nourished to prevent the risk of malnutrition
- Assess whether specific supplementation is necessary to improve the nutritional status of malnourished patients
- Develop nutritional plans adapted to patients who require them for various reasons: overweight, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, other pathologies, etc.
- Address dietary questions from patients as well as their families and/or caregivers
- Conduct workshops or educational talks for patients on topics of interest
- Train transplanted patients on how they should eat once they leave the center

Our Clinical Nutrition Team
The nutrition team is composed of María Abascal Souto and Macarena Canivell Jiménez, both dietitians-nutritionists specialized in clinical nutrition. María has been providing service at our center for a decade, which has allowed her to thoroughly understand the particularities of patients on dialysis and specialize in renal pathology. Additionally, she has collaborated on several occasions with the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, offering talks for kidney patients, and with Abbott, providing training to other healthcare professionals, such as doctors or nurses.
Currently, she balances her work at Diálisis Sierra Este with private nutrition consultations.

Our Clinical Nutrition Team
On her part, Macarena carried out her professional internships in the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at Diálisis Sierra Este. Years later, the need to expand the team to cover all patients gave her the opportunity to join the team. In turn, she also collaborates by offering her nutrition services to other healthcare centers. One of our priorities is to raise awareness about kidney disease, and we believe that the best way to do this is by training future health professionals. Therefore, we have internship agreements for the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics with Pablo de Olavide University (Seville) and Alfonso X El Sabio University (Madrid), and with the Ribamar Vocational Training Center for the Advanced Level Degree in Dietetics.
